Alison Lundergan Grimes grandmother, Thelma Lundergan McHugh, dies at age 92

With a great sense of sadness, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is informing Kentuckians that her paternal grandmother, Thelma Lundergan McHugh, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2012, at her home in Jessamine County, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and loved ones. “My grandmother instilled in me the confidence that I could accomplish anything I put my mind to and taught me by example the importance of being involved in my community,” reflected Grimes.

McHugh, who celebrated her 92nd birthday on May 12, became a star during Grimes’ campaign for the office of Secretary of State, filming commercials and encouraging citizens to vote in the election alongside Elsie Case, Grimes’ maternal grandmother. “My grandmother didn’t just talk the talk, she walked the walk,” said Grimes. “She worked in the Mason County Sheriff’s Office for over twenty years, and she stood by my side from the moment I filed to run for public office through my swearing-in and first six months as Secretary of State. I would not be where I am today without her love, influence and support.”

“I am grateful to friends of my grandmother across the state who have shown their support during this time. My grandmother lived a life worth celebrating, and I am moved by the kind words and touching memories people have shared leading up to and since her passing. I hope to honor her memory by continuing her legacy of service and hard work.” Arrangements for McHugh’s visitation and funeral are pending.
