Lexington-based ‘WoodSongs’ wins Telly
for broadcast featuring Emmylou Harris

The Lexington-based international broadcast of “Michael Johnathon’s WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour” has been awarded the 2012 National Telly Award, for its broadcast “Celebration of Appalachia and Mountain Music.” The broadcast featured Emmylou Harris and others who sang songs about their mountain heritage and expressed concerns about the practice of mountaintop removal.
 

The radio show, broadcast on PBS-TV stations nationwide, was awarded the TV prize over 11,000 entries from all 50 states and five continents.
 

The Telly Awards is the premier award honoring the finest film, TV and video productions, and outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs.
 

The WoodSongs broadcast airs on 507 radio stations worldwide, plus the American Forces Radio Network in 173 countries and every military base and U.S. Naval ship at sea. The Telly Award is based on WoodSongs’ TV broadcast, produced in a partnership with Insight Communications and KET. The TV broadcast is distributed to public and community television stations by NETA and received in more than 90 million U.S. homes on PBS stations and the Bluehighways Television Network.
 

The broadcast is unique in that it is run by volunteers. WoodSongs is produced 44 weeks a year in Lexington at the historic Kentucky Theater.
