Coach Cal offers sneak peek of corn maze celebrating UK’s 8th national championship

Try as they might, the Kelley Farms family of Lexington apparently was unable to keep this year’s University of Kentucky basketball-themed corn maze design a secret. And who let the, um, Cat out of the bag? None other than University of Kentucky coach John Calipari himself.

Calipari surprised the family and Big Blue fans alike when he flew over the maze and then shared a sneak peek of the design, which celebrates the UK men’s basketball NCAA national championship, on his Facebook page.

“We were days away from announcing this year’s design, but it’s impossible to hide a giant cornfield,” said farm owner John Kelley. “Coach Cal beat us to the punch, and there’s no one we’d rather have make the announcement.”

This year’s 10-acre maze features a UK player going for the basket, following up on last year’s bearing Calipari’s likeness.

“We’d like to congratulate him and the team for bringing home the trophy this year. We’re showing our Big Blue pride in a larger-than-life way – you just can’t beat that,” Kelley added.

In addition to the corn maze, visitors can enjoy hayrides, pumpkin picking, games and other outdoor activities at Kelley Farms, located at 6843 Old Richmond Road. The farm is open to visitors every Wednesday through Saturday, Sept. 14, through the last weekend in October, weather permitting.

Kelley Farms is the home of Central Kentucky’s Giant Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch. In previous years, corn maze designs have also included Daniel Boone, Abraham Lincoln, Henry Clay and an equestrian competitor.
