Former UK basketball player Anthony Davis became the youngest American men’s basketball player to win a gold medal with Team USA’s 107-100 win versus Spain Sunday in one of the final events of the London Olympics.
Davis did not score in 37 seconds on the floor at the end of the game, but he did grab the last rebound of the Olympics and had the ball in his hands as time expired. The gold medal caps off a year that saw Davis named National Player of the Year, Final Four Most Outstanding Player and NBA No. 1 pick. Davis also helped lead UK to its eighth national championship. He is the 10th former Wildcat men’s basketball player to win a gold medal.
The London Olympics ended Sunday with five former Kentucky high school or college athletes earning medals. In addition to Davis, former UofL women’s basketball player Angel McCoughtry and former WKU swimmer Claire Donahue each won a gold medal. Lexington native Tyson Gay and Louisville native Dotsie Bausch won silver medals in track and field and cycling respectively. All five of Kentucky’s medals came in team events.
