UK Police recover 17-month-old reported abducted from Los Angeles in October

Alouette Day-Moreno-Baltierra is currently in the care of Kentucky's Child Protective Services.

University of Kentucky Police have safely recovered 17-month-old Alouette Day-Moreno-Baltierra, who was reported abducted from Los Angeles, on Oct. 15, possibly by a family member.

“This is an example of where the responding officers followed a gut feeling that something just wasn’t right with the situation,” said UK Police Chief Joe Monroe. “We have been in working with the Child Protective Services, LAPD and the FBI to make sure that we get Alouette returned safely to her legal custodian.”

On Thursday, Dec. 27, UK Police Officers Jennifer Ockerman and Emily Smith observed Maria Baltierra-Dejesus pushing a stroller through a parking lot on campus in the inclement weather with an infant that was not properly dressed for the weather conditions. Upon further investigation it was determined that the child had been reported abducted in California.

Baltierra-Dejesus, a resident of New York, was charged with endangering the welfare of a minor and custodial interference by UK Police with further felony charges pending from the state of California.

Officers Jennifer Ockerman, left, and Emily Smith recoverd the missing child Thursday.

The child has been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services in Kentucky until further proceedings take place to return her to California.

“I am very pleased by the performance of our officers in resolving this case and being able to safely recover Alouette,” said Monroe.
