This fall, LexArts will be Crafting Our Future from Our Past! The Bourbon Barrel Project on Town Branch is a unique public art event that will celebrate not only the history and lore of Kentucky’s beloved bourbon, but also the chronicle of a long-buried stream that was a formative basis of historic Lexington, the Town Branch.
Building on the tremendous success of HorseMania 2000 and 2010, LexArts, in partnership with Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company, will be rolling out the barrels! Look for this exciting public art project on the streets of Lexington in the fall of 2013.
In presenting the Bourbon Barrel Project on Town Branch, LexArts seeks to accomplish three objectives: highlight Lexington’s rich bourbon heritage and the role the Town Branch played in its development; emphasize the potential for the transformation of downtown Lexington; and, generate more interest in, and support for public art.
Artists from Kentucky will be juried in a two-step process to paint and embellish authentic bourbon barrels for outdoor display in Lexington. The barrels will be exhibited in downtown Lexington along the path of the Town Branch, which flows under Vine Street and Midland Avenue. A detailed Call For Artists is available here.
Throughout the project, special events will be hosted for our artists and sponsors, as well as for the public. Making art accessible to everyone is a major tenet of the LexArts mission. As proof of the ability to make that happen, the 2000 and 2010 HorseMania projects saw countless thousands of Lexingtonians and visitors walking our streets, marveling at artistic imagination, eating in our restaurants, perusing our galleries…discovering and exploring downtown.
Just as with Horsemania, barrel sponsorships will be made available to businesses and private citizens alike. Bourbon barrel designs juried into the project will be placed in a Bourbon Barrel Project on Town Branch Portfolio from which sponsoring businesses and individuals may select. Specific times will be arranged for each sponsor to view the portfolio based on when the sponsor paid – first paid in full, first to select. Sponsors will also have the opportunity to purchase their barrel outright. Those barrels not purchased by sponsors will be auctioned at a gala event in early November.
The Bourbon Barrel Project on Town Branch is a public art project of LexArts and is being managed with partnership support from Alltech’s Lexington Brewing and Distilling Company. As of this release, major underwriting support is being provided by the University of Kentucky Federal Credit Union and Kentucky Eagle, Inc., with major in-kind support provided by Oldcastle Concrete and Meridian-Chiles.
Additional underwriting and in-kind sponsorship opportunities are available; interested parties may contact Jim Clark, President and CEO of LexArts, at jim@bourbonbarrels.org. For barrel sponsorship inquiries, please contact Maury Sparrow, LexArts communications director, at maury@bourbonbarrels.org.
