Bluegrass Greensource kicks of fifth annual Main Street Clean Sweep in 19 area communities

Beginning today through April 27, Bluegrass Greensource will organize more than a thousand volunteers across Central Kentucky for community-led litter pickups in 19 different communities. Bluegrass Greensource and organizing sites are accepting volunteers to help clear streets, streams, sidewalks, and parks of litter and debris.

There are multiple opportunities in Central Kentucky to get involved in a community litter pick-up. Main Street Clean Sweep, presented by Commonwealth Credit Union, will be taking place 19 different locations across the bluegrass.

Last year, over 1,000 volunteers in 20 communities filled 706 bags with litter and removed almost five tons of waste. This year, clean-ups are scheduled between Thursday, April 19 and Friday, April 27, 2018. Times and locations are specific and chosen by each community. Bluegrass Greensource provides volunteers an event t-shirt (as supplies last) bags, gloves, and litter grabbers. Individuals, families, clubs, organizations, and businesses are encouraged to volunteer and may register at bggreensource.z2systems.com.

“Bluegrass Greensource organizes Main Street Clean Sweep as a way to help Central Kentuckians feel empowered on Earth Day,” says Amy Sohner, Bluegrass Greensource Executive Director. “Throughout April, there is a lot of talk about ‘going green,’ but it can be hard to find out how to participate. What better way to understand that small changes can make a big impact than cleaning up Central Kentucky with 1,000 of your peers?”

This year, clean-ups are planned in Carlisle, Cynthiana, Danville, Frankfort, Georgetown, Harrodsburg, Irvine, Lancaster, Lawrenceburg, Lexington, Richmond, Sadieville, Shelbyville, Stamping Ground, Stanford, Wilmore, and Winchester. Main Street Clean Sweep is held rain or shine. All litter and debris collected during Main Street Clean Sweep will be properly disposed of by the local communities. An interactive map showing all of the times and location of the cleanups can be found at bggreensource.org
