The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government has started using Nextdoor, the private social network for neighborhoods, to improve city and county-wide communications by connecting with residents on a hyper-local level.

The City joins the Lexington Police Department and Lexington Emergency Management on Nextdoor, both of whom are celebrating one year on the platform.

“Using Nextdoor, we can send information to the direct neighborhoods impacted for services like date changes in waste collection and leaf vacuuming,” said Commissioner of Environmental Quality and Public Works Dowell Hoskins-Squier. “It will be a great addition to the other tools we already use to reach citizens, including mailers, news outlets and our other social media channels.”

Nextdoor is popular amongst Lexington neighborhoods. More than 200 neighborhoods are connected and communicating on the social network.

With Nextdoor, Lexington residents create private neighborhood websites to share information, including neighborhood public safety issues, community events and activities, local services, and even lost pets.

Nextdoor is free for residents and public agencies. Each Lexington neighborhood has its own private Nextdoor neighborhood website, accessible only to residents of that neighborhood. Neighborhoods establish and self-manage their own Nextdoor website. The City is not able to access residents’ websites, contact information or content. All members must verify that they live within the neighborhood before joining Nextdoor. Information shared on Nextdoor is password protected and cannot be accessed by Google or other search engines.

The City joins over 2,500 public agencies across the country that are using Nextdoor for Public Agencies to build stronger relationships with residents.

Those interested in joining their neighborhood’s Nextdoor website can visit nextdoor.com and enter their address.
