‘Legal Food Frenzy’ campaign nets 630,000 pounds of food for regional food banks; winners announced

During the second-annual Kentucky Legal Food Frenzy March 15 through April 2, the state’s legal community donated more than 630,000 pounds of food to benefit children in need.

The 2018 campaign was an opportunity for Kentucky lawyers and legal staff to compete outside the courtroom to donate food and raise funds. Proceeds generated help Kentucky’s seven regional food banks prepare for increased food demand during the summer months.

Last year the food banks distributed over 75 million pounds of food across 120 counties.

Attorney General Andy Beshear said this year’s competition helps to support the one in 12 children who receive free or reduced-price lunch during the school year but do not have access to such meals during the summer.

“Making sure our children never have to worry about where their next meal is coming from is the reason behind Kentucky’s Legal Food Frenzy,” Beshear said. “This competition is proof that Kentucky’s legal community is united in our fight to end childhood hunger and to help our youth have a real path to prosperity.”

This year, 118 law firms and legal organizations representing more than 2,000 attorneys and staff competed.

Beshear’s office contributed the equivalent of 10,285 pounds of food, including monetary donations of almost $1,000.

Frost Brown Todd LLC won the top prize, the Attorney General’s Cup, by raising the equivalent of 82,365 pounds of food.

The Kentucky Legal Food Frenzy is a partnership between the Office of the Attorney General, the Office of the Secretary of State, Kentucky Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and the Kentucky Association of Food Banks.

“Kentucky’s food bank network is grateful to Attorney General Beshear, Secretary of State Grimes, the Young Lawyers Division and all the firms, legal organizations and law schools that worked hard to help stock the shelves of food banks,” said Tamara Sandberg, executive director of the Kentucky Association of Food Banks.

Beshear said he is extremely grateful to those who supported the competition.

“I appreciate the hard work of the Kentucky Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Chair Eric Weihe and campaign co-chairs Elizabeth Combs and Teresa McMahan, as well as Susan Rieber in my office,” Beshear said. “I also applaud the generosity of all the lawyers and legal staff who contributed to this important effort.”

Winners of the 2018 Kentucky Legal Food Frenzy are:

Large Firm – Grand Prize Winner
Frost Brown Todd in Lexington, Louisville and Florence donated 371 pounds per attorney, 82,365 pounds total.

Medium Firm — 
DBL Law in Crestview Hills donated 698 pounds per attorney, 22,325 pounds total.

Small Firm
 — O’Brien Batten & Kirtley in Lexington donated 2,355 pounds per attorney, 11,775 pounds total.

Solo Firm
 — Hicks & Funfsinn in Lexington donated 30,508 pounds per attorney, 61,015 pounds total.

Corporate Legal Department — 
GE Appliances in Louisville donated 76,921 pounds.

Government and Public Service
 — Office of Commonwealth’s Attorney, 30th Judicial Circuit in Louisville donated 26,408 pounds. 

Law School — 
University of Kentucky College of Law in Lexington donated 1,170 pounds.

The Kentucky Bar Association Young Lawyers Division will present the awards at its luncheon Thursday, June 14, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Lexington.
