Sixth annual Shamrock Shuffle race
will benefit Lexington Habitat for Humanity

Lexington Habitat for Humanity will hold its sixth annual Shamrock Shuffle 3K race on March 17 in downtown Lexington to raise funds to continue to build affordable housing for families in need.

Last year, Lexington Habitat for Humanity provided 15 families with new homes, and it has even more ambitious goals for 2012.

“We are anticipating partnering with 19 families this year, so (proceeds) will go to supporting those efforts,” said Megan Meserve, Shamrock Shuffle 3K race director.

The Shamrock Shuffle is unique in that it is shorter than many other races and is “family-friendly,” Meserve said.

“Whole families can participate in the race and everyone can feel like they really did something together,” she said. “It’s only a 3K — it’s 1.85 miles. We feel like any kids can do it, as well as their parents.”

Race t-shirts will be available in children’s sizes and prizes will be given to a wide range of age brackets. There will also be a costume contest and door prizes given out at the race, Meserve said.

The short-distance race is also a good option for experienced runners who want to sprint, Meserve said.

Lexington Habitat anticipates about 2,500 participants and expects to earn upwards of $30,000 from the race..

Through the end of February, registration is $22. It goes up to $25 in March. Runners can register online anytime, at the Habitat ReStore on March 10 and 16 or on race day at the Atrium at Victorian Square.

Racers can stay downtown after the race to enjoy the free St. Patrick’s Day Festival, which begins at 1 p.m., and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade down Main Street that starts at 3 p.m.
