114 volunteer to serve on Homelessness Commission, will examine challenges, needs

One-hundred and fourteen people have volunteered to serve on the Mayor’s Commission on Homelessness, announced by Mayor Jim Gray earlier this month.
 

“It’s encouraging to have so many interested in serving on the Commission,” said Susan Straub, Gray’s spokeswoman. “But it also means we will be adjusting the appointment schedule. This is a complex issue. We need experienced citizens around the problem-solving table, working to find the best solutions for everyone.” The commission will be appointed in June, Straub said.
 

Straub said she was not really surprised a lot of citizens have been interested in serving on the commission. “As the Mayor has said, our community has a long record of reaching out to help those who need shelter,” she said.
 

The commission will examine long-term challenges and outstanding needs. It will also evaluate recent studies of homelessness in Lexington.
