For the 35th year in a row, horse racing will not have a triple crown winner.
Doug O’Neil, trainer of I’ll Have Another, announced Friday morning on the Dan Patrick Show that the winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness is officially out of Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.
O’Neil cited a left front leg injury as the reason for the decision to scratch the horse.
“We ain’t taking any chances,” O’Neil told Patrick.
Affirmed was the last Triple Crown winner in 1978.
