Tates Creek senior only Kentuckian to
earn Gates Millennium Scholarship

Surya Green, a senior at Tates Creek High School, will receive a Gates Millennium Scholarship that will cover her expenses at Baylor University in Texas.
 

These scholarships aim to reduce financial barriers for minority students and provide for leadership development, mentoring, and academic and social support. Each year, 1,000 students nationwide receive the good-through-graduation awards to use at the college or university of their choice.
 

“That’s amazing. I had no idea,” Surya said after hearing she is Kentucky’s only recipient.
 

Surya intends to major in international relations, work for United Nations and become an ambassador for the UNICEF program.
 

“I like to help people and I like to travel. I study a lot of different countries in IB classes, so it’ll be really interesting to go and help with different programs,” she said.
 

Surya is student body president at Tates Creek and is active in DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), Y Club and Beta Club. She also is a member of the school’s speech team, swim team and the principal’s advisory board.
 

When she’s not studying, Surya is volunteering at St. Joseph East Hospital or managing her handmade jewelry business. She also just received the 2012 Youth Achiever of the Year award through the YMCA of Central Kentucky’s Black Achievers Program.
 

“Her mom has raised an excellent young lady who’s very determined and focused on her education,” said Angela Davis, the Youth Services Center director at Tates Creek. “She’s a great person, and she works hard. I know she’ll be successful in anything she does.”
 

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, established in 1999, is funded by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
