The Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence will focus on effective teaching at their spring meeting, set for June 10-11, 2012, at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park.
Committee members will hear from Jerry Weast, former superintendent of Montgomery County Schools in Maryland, who will discuss “School District Strategies for Assuring Effective Teaching.” As head of one of the country’s largest and highest-performing school districts, Weast succeeded in narrowing achievement gaps between groups of students and was recognized as one of the nation’s leading superintendents.
A group of Kentucky teachers also will share their experiences with the committee in a panel discussion: From the Classroom Perspective: Common Core, Senate Bill 1, End of Course Exams – How’s It Going?
Robert King, president of the Council on Postsecondary Education, will discuss the role his agency and postsecondary institutions play in the implementation of Kentucky’s college and career-ready academic standards.
The committee also will hear an overview of the state’s assessment and accountability system from consultant Susan Weston.
The meeting will begin at 12 noon, CDT and conclude at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 10 and continue at 8:30 a.m. CDT, Monday, June 11 with adjournment at noon that day.
