Norma Oliver’s Furniture Rescue: Gorgeous turquoise six-legged accent table and news!

When I first saw this table, it looked very sad and neglected. I think it was purchased at a flea market. Is it scary that I can’t remember? Anyway, the veneer was peeling and the legs were faded and just a mess. It looked like it had been left out in the rain or something. However, I could see a beautiful future for this table.

First thing was to remove the rest of the veneer. Thankfully, it came off easy and all I needed to do was give it a good sanding. I know veneer is often applied to give the illusion that there is one large solid piece of wood, so I wasn’t surprised to see the seams of the wood pieces of the table top. I actually think that looks cool in the shabby chic realm. I decided staining the top will look impressive, especially accompanied by a beautiful stencil that would match the leg color. Deep, rich walnut was the color of choice.

The legs were various shades of faded brown stain, but had potentially charming legs, six of them! I knew the color for this lovely table had to be “Florence”, the rich turquoise color chalk paint. It’s such a gorgeous vibrant color that would look amazing with the stained top. As much as I love this color, on its own it was a bit to vivid for the look I was trying to achieve. This was easily remedied by application of a diluted wash of walnut stain. Perfectly muted color and enough darkness in the crevices and detail to enhance the contours of the legs.

The stencil on top was also muted with the diluted walnut stain. This attractive detail enhanced an otherwise plain surface and of course complimented the same color already used on the legs. The final finish for the piece is a new favorite of mine, Varathane in satin. I love the satin finish on my pieces, enough of a sheen to enhance and protect, but not too showy.
