Alison Lundergan Grimes recognizes J. Graham Brown School with 2019 Georgia Davis Powers Award

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes presented students from J. Graham Brown School the 2019 Georgia Davis Powers Award on Wednesday.

In 2016, Grimes created the Georgia Davis Powers Award, honoring the late state Senator Georgia Davis Powers, the first African-American and woman elected to the Kentucky State Senate. The award is presented to schools with 100 percent of eligible students registered to vote.

“This award honors Senator Powers and her passion for getting young people involved in the democratic process,” said Grimes. “She knew that equality begins at the ballot box and I can’t think of a better way to honor her work then to award young people who encourage their peers to register to vote and be civically engaged.”

As the Commonwealth’s Chief Advocate for Civic Engagement and Chief Election Official, Grimes has worked to encourage young people to get engaged and to know the power in their voice. Through creating Kentucky’s first-ever online voter registration portal “GoVoteKY.com” to advocating for legislation to allow qualified 16 and 17-year-olds to pre-register and serve as precinct election officers, Grimes has worked to break down barriers to the ballot box and make it easier for Kentuckians to participate in democracy.

“These students are no stranger to making their school and community a better place,” said Grimes. “The Brown School was the first school to win this award back in 2016 and I’m so proud to present them this award again 3 years later. My hope is that they continue to stay engaged and register their peers to vote ahead of the 2020 presidential election.”

Kentucky high schools with 100 percent voter registration among students who are eligible may apply for the Powers Award at sos.ky.gov.
