Ballet Under the Stars returns to Lexington’s Woodland Park for 29th year August 2-3

Lexington Parks and Recreation is celebrating the 29th year of Ballet Under the Stars with an enchanting evening filled with performances and activities for dance lovers of all ages.

This annual summer event will run Aug. 2–5 (rain date Aug. 6) in Woodland Park, 601 E. High St. The main show, featuring the Kentucky Ballet Theatre, will begin at 9 p.m. each evening. Admission is $6 (sales tax included); children under 3 are free.

Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating at the amphitheater. Patrons may pack a picnic dinner or buy from local food trucks on site.

For those wanting an earlier start to their evening of ballet – and a journey over the rainbow – the Ballet Under the Stars Preshow, “The Wizard of Oz,” will begin at 8 p.m. Young, local dancers from studios across central Kentucky will present the classic tale of Dorothy and her unconventional companions as they find their way through Oz. Of course, Toto will be there, too!

New this year: special theme nights!

• Father-Daughter Night: Thursday, Aug. 2

On opening night, Ballet Under the Stars celebrates fathers and daughters. Little girls will cherish a magical evening of ballet with Dad by their side. Start a summer tradition your daughter will remember for years to come.

• Alumni Night: Friday, Aug. 3

Calling all Ballet Under the Stars dancers from years past for a special reunion. Alumni are encouraged to be in the audience this night to reminisce about those magical summer evenings of long – or not so long – ago when they twirled across the Woodland Park stage.

• Rainbow Night: Saturday, Aug. 4

To celebrate this year’s Preshow production of The Wizard of Oz, the Mayor of Munchkinland has decreed that Ballet Under the Stars’ Saturday, August 4 production is Rainbow Night! Show up for an evening of colorful dance in any Oz-inspired costume you dare to dream up and participate in the costume contest!

• Dance Studio Night: Sunday, Aug. 5

On the final night of Ballet Under the Stars, we recognize the local and regional dance studios and teams that have provided our preshow production with so many talented dancers over the years. Dress in your team or studio colors and show your love of dance.

Ballet tea parties

To coincide with the preshow theme, children ages 3-8 are invited to a Munchkin Tea featuring snacks, activities and a special musical performance. Little ones may don their most glamorous outfit and meet characters from the Ballet Under the Stars pre-show.

Tea parties will take place before the Aug. 3–5 performance, from 6–7 p.m. Ticket prices are $16 each (sales tax included), with no charge for parents or guardians. Cost also includes the tea party participant’s cost of admission to Ballet Under the Stars.

To attend the tea party, children must be registered in advance at www.lexingtonky.gov.
