Blood donation during Labor Day camping trip nets Winchester man a new Toyota Highlander

Because he donated blood with Kentucky Blood Center this summer, a Clark County man will receive the keys to a 2017 Toyota Highlander.

Harold Ballard, of Winchester, was camping over Labor Day Weekend and decided to donate at the Fort Boonesborough State Park Blood Drive. With that blood donation, he was entered into the blood center’s summer grand prize drawing.

Anyone who registered to give blood with Kentucky Blood Center (KBC) June 1 through Sept. 8 was automatically entered into the drawing, which consisted of more than 24,000 entries. KBC did the Toyota giveaway to help encourage people to give blood during the summer months, a time when blood donations can typically dip.

KBC will present the vehicle to Ballard today at Beaumont Donor Center, located at 3121 Beaumont Centre Circle.

“We’re excited to award the Highlander to Mr. Ballard, and we are especially pleased that so many people donated blood this summer. It’s our mission to provide a sufficient blood supply for the Kentucky patients we serve, and in the summer that can frequently be an especially difficult task,” said Bill Reed, KBC President and CEO. “We appreciate those who donated and saved lives this summer, and also Toyota on Nicholasville who helped make this grand prize possible.”
