Dare to Care Food Bank, Anthem Foundation extend Dollars for Doers Challenge matches for volunteers

Dare to Care Food Bank and the Anthem Foundation have extended the successful Dollars for Doers Challenge until March 31 to provide even more support to Dare to Care’s efforts feeding the rising number of food-insecure people in Kentuckiana. The Anthem Foundation’s Dollars For Doers Challenge matches every hour volunteered at Dare To Care with a $10 donation. The Challenge launched in November and the community is responding.

Levels of food insecurity spiked with the pandemic’s onset in March 2020. Feeding America projects the number of food-insecure people in Kentuckiana jumped from 158,000 to 203,000 in a matter of months. During that time, social distancing and other pandemic prevention measures have strained Dare to Care’s volunteer numbers and its operations that depend on volunteer labor.

Brian Riendeau, Dare to Care’s Executive Director, says that the Anthem Foundation Challenge could not be more timely. “As we see record-setting levels of food insecurity, we see challenges for people who want to volunteer. Dollars for Doers has been a huge boost to our critical volunteer labor force and our ability to serve our most vulnerable neighbors. Great partners like the Anthem Foundation are why we are able to make progress toward our vision of a hunger-free Kentuckiana.”

“It’s remarkable how Kentuckiana has stepped up to help our neighbors face an alarming rise in hunger and food insecurity driven by COVID-19’s aftermath, particularly the inspiring response to the Dare to Care Challenge,” said Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Kentucky Medical Director Jeff Reynolds, M.D. “Unfortunately, great need remains; that’s why Anthem Foundation and Dare to Care extended the $10 match for every hour volunteered through March 31. Making sure none of our neighbors goes hungry is a critical first step toward emerging on the other side of this pandemic.”

Dare to Care has taken necessary measures to assure volunteer safety, including mandatory masks, social distancing, hand-washing, and other steps. In addition to its warehouses and kitchen, Dare to Care offers volunteer opportunities with its partner nonprofits throughout Greater Louisville and Southern Indiana.

To participate in the Dollars For Doers Challenge, visit Volunteer.DaretoCare.org or call 502-966-3821 now through March 31, 2021. Anthem Foundation will automatically match every hour volunteered with a $10 donation to Dare to Care.
