Support sought for Dunbar baseball player severely injured in diving accident in Florida

Staff report

Family and friends of Dunbar High School baseball player Travis Gaines are organizing a Facebook campaign to garner donations for Gaines and his family following a diving accident in Florida that left the 18-year-old in serious condition.

According to reports, Gaines, a senior outfield on the Dunbar team, is in a Pensacola hospital after apparently diving into shallow water near Destin Tuesday. Gaines and his teammates are in Florida for the annual Florida Beach Bash Tournament.

“The Gaineses already have an older daughter that is paraplegic that has graciously taken on this life challenge, and they are all going to need the community to rally around them as they deal with Travis’ injury,” said the Let’s Rally Around Travis Gaines” Facebook page. “Lets get the Lexington community and the local baseball community behind this family.”

Donations are being accepted at every Fifth Third Bank location. The account number is #7381120349. For those who want to donate wirelessly or electronically, the routing number is 042101190. Fifth Third Bank will not charge transfer fees for amounts below $2,000. Make checks payable to “For the Benefit of Travis Gaines.”

Keven Moore, who set up the Facebook page, said he plans to try to post updates on Gaines’ condition and encourages everyone to “keep praying.”

“Let the family know how many of us is lifting them up to prayers,” Moore said.
