EKU baseball star A.J. Lewis signs contract with Colorado Rockies; Chicago native batted .451 in 2020

Eastern Kentucky University star catcher A.J. Lewis has signed a contract with the Colorado Rockies.

“Being a professional baseball player is a dream come true,” Lewis said.

Lewis was on the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year watch list in 2019 and 2020. He hit .303 with 45 runs scored, 10 doubles, nine home runs, a team-best 49 runs batted in and 17 stolen bases in 2019.

“It is always a special day to see a player reach his dreams,” EKU head coach Edwin Thompson said. “A.J. is leaving EKU with a college degree, as an All-American and now he is a professional baseball player. These are the reasons players are coming to EKU, to achieve and to get the best experience EKU and our baseball program can provide.”

Lewis is the ninth player to be drafted or sign a professional contract during Thompson’s five-year tenure as head coach.

The Chicago native finished the 2020 season with a .451 batting average, three home runs, 21 RBI, 15 runs scored and three stolen bases. He posted an .843 slugging percentage and a .541 on-base percentage.

Lewis tied for first in the Ohio Valley Conference in on-base percentage, was second in batting average, second in slugging, tied for second in triples (2), tied for third in RBI, tied for fourth in doubles (7) and tied for sixth in total bases (43).

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound senior was the only player in NCAA Division I baseball to hit .450 or better, score 15 or more runs and drive in 20 or more during the 2020 season.

Lewis ranked seventh in the NCAA in slugging, 13th in batting average, 25th in RBI, 25th in on-base percentage and 34th in total bases.
