EKU football standout Aaron Patrick named preseason All-American by national publication


Eastern Kentucky University defensive lineman Aaron Patrick has earned a spot on the Phil Steele preseason All-America team, the publication announced Wednesday. Patrick, a redshirt senior, is listed by Steele as a first-team All-America selection.

Patrick was chosen to the HERO Sports 2019 FCS preseason All-America Team earlier this summer and to the STATS preseason All-America Team in July. He is also on 2019 STATS Buck Buchanan Award watch list for national defensive player of the year.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pound defensive end was a first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference pick by coaches and communications directors and first-team All-OVC by Phil Steele last season. Patrick ranked second in the OVC with 0.68 sacks per game. He finished the season with 53 tackles, 12 tackles for a loss, 7.5 sacks, 15 quarterback hurries and one pass break-up.

Patrick had 2.5 sacks in the season-opener against Morehead State (Aug. 30). He had a sack in a near upset of FBS Bowling Green (Sept. 15). The Dayton, Ohio, native had 1.5 sacks against Eastern Illinois (Oct. 27) and posted a sack with six tackles in the season finale at Tennessee Tech (Nov. 17).

EKU is ranked 24th in the preseason HERO Sports Top 25 and 25th in the Lindy’s Sports preseason Top 25. The Colonels were picked to finish third in the OVC. The Colonels posted a 7-4 overall record last season and finished third in the OVC with a 5-2 mark.

EKU will begin the 2019 season having won 10 of its last 16 games. The Colonels begin the season on Aug. 29 when Valparaiso visits Roy Kidd Stadium.
