Fifth annual United Way 5K on the Runway set for Saturday at Blue Grass Airport

United Way of the Bluegrass and Blue Grass Airport have partnered to host the fifth annual 5K on the Runway, presented by BC Wood Properties. The race will be held at the airport on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 8 a.m.

All are invited to participate in this year’s race on a chip-timed course allowing the public to run or walk on an actual runway and around Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport. Enjoy the thrill of planes taking off and landing on a neighboring runway as you run or walk to help benefit the Bluegrass community through United Way. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience the airport from a unique perspective.

“We are thrilled to bring this family-friendly event back for another year,” said Eric Frankl, executive director of Blue Grass Airport. “It is a pleasure to partner with the United Way of the Bluegrass to provide a unique venue for participants to enjoy aviation, get healthy and support the local fundraising initiatives of a great organization.”

Participants and spectators at this family friendly event will enjoy free entertainment including music, concessions and a small aircraft display including the Lexington Police helicopter, as well as entertainment for children provided by the Lexington Legends including inflatables and an appearance by Big L and Pee Wee.

The cost for adults is $30.00 and online registration will be open through June 9. Children ages 6-14 may register for $20 and ages 5 and under may register at no cost.

Race packet pick-up and on-site registration will be available on Friday, June 10 at the Lexington Herald-Leader, 100 Midland Avenue, between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Strollers are welcome, but please note that pets, bikes, skates or other vehicles are not permitted.

Participants are asked to arrive at the race by 7:30 AM to allow time for parking and check-in. Free parking is available on-site.

To access the event, participants should enter by the airport’s Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting Training Center on Versailles Road, just west of Keeneland Race Course at 4832 Versailles Road. There will be no access through the airport’s main terminal or parking garage. Directions are available on the race website at www.5KontheRunway.com.
