Freshman Dorfman scores 18 points, but Transylvania loses 76-58 on Senior Day

The Pioneers were unable to keep up with a tough Defiance College squad Satuday, falling at home on Senior Day, 76-58.

Freshman Garret Dorfman finished with an impressive stat line, coming off the bench to lead all scorers with 18 points. Dorfman went 6-for-9 from the field and 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Freshmen Mason Monroe and Alex Jones both finished with 12 points, while sophomore Joe Jennings grabbed eight boards.

The first half started with a Jones short jumper in the paint to give Transylvania its first and only lead of the game. The Yellow Jackets would jump out to an 11-point lead at 17-6, which would eventually grow to 18 through sharp shooting and smothering defense. The Pioneers struggled all game to rebound over a towering Defiance team, who out rebounded them 43-24, 16 of which were offensive rebounds. The Yellow Jackets made them pay with 25 second-chance points.

The Pioneers fought back through solid production from Dorfman and Jones to cut the lead to 10 with 1:36 to play in the first. Dorfman would hit a big time three pointer from the right corner with four seconds left in the half to send the Pioneers into the locker room with momentum and a seven-point deficit.

The Pioneers would come out of the half again depending heavily on Dorfman, who quickly cut the lead to five with a jumper from the elbow. This was the closest the Pioneers would come for the rest of the contest.

Freshman Mason Monroe would help the scoring effort with seven second-half points, but poor overall shooting and turnovers would plague the Pioneers. Defiance would go on to shoot 46 percent from the field in an effort that would see Transylvania down as many as 24 at 60-36 in an impressive 25-6 run ending at the 11:14 mark.

The Pioneers would come back only as close as 14 with five minutes left to play through Monroe free throws. The second place Yellow Jackets would ride the game out and finish with a convincing 18-point victory, 58-76.

Transylvania finished the day shooting 39 percent from the field, paired with 12 turnovers and an -19 rebounding margin. They were 4-for-14 from three point range and 14-for-20 from the charity stripe.

The Pioneers will travel to Hanover to take on the Panthers this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
