Georgetown favored to win MSC East Division race; Linsey Wilson second in West poll

Georgetown (Ky.) is the favorite to finish atop the Mid South Conference East Division standings while Reinhardt (Ga.) is the near-unanimous pick to win the West Division, according to the conference’s preseason football coaches’ poll announced Monday.

Georgetown received 35 voting points — including five of the seven first-place votes — from the East coaches. Reinhardt garnered 25 total points and five of the six first-place votes in the West.

Coaches only voted within their division and were not allowed to vote for their own team in the poll.

EAST DIVISION

Georgetown won their sixth East Division title last season with a record of 5-0 against the East last season. The Tigers were ranked 23rd in the 2016 NAIA Football Coaches’ Spring Top 25 Poll.

Cumberlands (Ky.) is second in the conference preseason poll with 32 points and the Patriots earned the final two first-place votes. Pikeville (Ky.) was selected to finish third in 2016 with 26 total points, while Union was fourth with 18 points.

Kentucky Christian and Bluefield (Va.) each garnered 15 points as the Knights and Rams are tied for fifth. Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) is seventh with six points in their first season of competition.

WEST DIVISION

Reinhardt finished second in the West last season as they went 4-1 in the division and the Eagles made their first appearance in the NAIA Football Championship Series in 2015. Coming into the 2016 season, Reinhardt is ranked 10th in the 2016 NAIA Football Coaches’ Spring Top 25 Poll.

Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) was picked to finish second with 18 points, while Faulkner (Ala.) is just behind the Blue Raiders in the poll with 17 points. Faulkner earned the final first-place vote. Campbellsville (Ky.) – who won the 2015 MSC West Division title – earned 13 points and was selected to finish fourth in the division.

Cumberland (Tenn.) is fifth in the West with 10 points and Bethel (Tenn.) is sixth with seven total points.

Joining Reinhardt and Georgetown in the 2016 NAIA Football Coaches’ Spring Top 25 Poll are No. 12 Campbellsville, No. 13 Lindsey Wilson and No. 24 Faulkner. Cumberlands is just outside the top 25, but still receiving votes.

Cincinnati Christian joins the MSC East Division this season as they are a new program entering their first season of competition.

The 2016 season begins in late August.
