Staff report

From guys selling grilled cheese and tomato soup on Fountain Square in Cincinnati to ABC’s Shark Tank to Lexington, Louisville and now Newport, Corey Ward and Trew Quackenbush have taken their restaurant concept all over but settled on Newport-on-the-Levee as their flagship location.

The Newport-on-the-Levee restaurant will be the location the pair use to host interested franchisees from all over the world. The pair have received thousands of franchisee requests after appearing on the ABC show from all 50 states, Mexico, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.

They have since opened restaurants in Louisville and Lexington, and two in Cincinnati. They are expanding further in Ohio, in Michigan and in New Jersey. They currently have 10 locations, but have a total of 150 in 20 states under franchise contract.

It reopens after extensive remodeling tomorrow on Saturday, April 26, with a day-long party, charitable raffle, magic, circus and a chocolate bacon grilled cheese donut!

Saturday’s Grand Reopening will be from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and feature its newest concoction. Called the “Choco Bacon Bliss” it is a combination of bacon, pieces of chocolate, mozzarella, chocolate mascarpone and donut.

The Newport location first opened in 2011 in a former burrito restaurant, but Ward and Quackenbush did little more than clean and paint at that time. Now, the remodeled restaurant features a completely different layout, custom tables and flooring, increased seating, a redesigned kitchen and a patio with a new awning and side panels which will allow it to be a three-season room.

“Planning for this has been in the works for more than six months,” says Ward. “It’s exciting to finally see our true vision come to life.”

The Saturday event will include a raffle benefiting Awesome Fathers Taking Roles.

Raffle prizes, including T+C merchandise, will be awarded throughout the day capped by a 5:55 p.m. drawing for the Grand Prize package: a hotel stay at Comfort Suites in Newport, tickets to the Newport Aquarium and gift cards to Tom+Chee. All raffle proceeds will be donated to Awesome Fathers Taking Roles as part of Tom+Chee’s charitable initiative called The Grilled Cheese That Cares. Raffle tickets are currently being sold at Cincinnati-area Tom+Chee locations.

AFTR is a nonprofit organization dedicated to “educating fathers and role models in the homes of children with special needs.” It was started two years ago by Mark Walker, whose daughter was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Cornelia de Lang syndrome. The organization’s primary annual event is Dance With My Daddy, a special evening out for dads and their children with special needs. At the event, grant money is given to many of the families to assist with costly medical bills.

From 3-5 p.m. on Saturday at Tom+Chee in Newport will be table side magic shows by Wizardz Magic Theater. From 6-7:30 p.m., there will be performances by Circus Mojo.
