Hope Gala honors Louisville’s Cure Champions on Sept. 21; event benefits American Cancer Society


Hope will shine bright in Louisville on Sept. 21 at the Omni Hotel as the American Cancer Society honors eight Cure Champions for their contributions to the community at its annual Hope Gala.

“The Cure Champions are the stars of the evening and embody the hope we have a for a world without cancer,” said Chris Hinkebein, chair of the Gala Board of Ambassadors. “They shine a light on the progress we are making in this fight.”

WAVE 3 News’ Shannon Cogan will serve as emcee for the evening, joined by Kevin Harned as auctioneer, from 6 p.m. to midnight in the Omni Louisville Hotel Commonwealth Ballroom. Festivities begin with a VIP reception, a celebration of the Cure Champion honorees, a live auction, and dancing with the live band, Groove Essential.

Cure Champions are selected in the following categories: Medical/Research; Volunteer; Survivors; and Business Partners. The 2019 Cure Champions include:

• Dr. John Hamm of the Norton Cancer Institute

• Dr. Alfred “Ben” Jenson, Emeriti of the University of Louisville, School of Medicine; James Graham Brown Cancer Center

• Dr. Shin-je Ghim, Emeriti of the University of Louisville, School of Medicine; James Graham Brown Cancer Center

• Kevin Wardell, retired president of Norton Cancer Institute; past Hope Gala chair

• John Huggins, retired from Jefferson County Public Schools; American Cancer Society Relay for Life volunteer

• Dawne Gee of WAVE 3 News

• Connie Sorrell of the Kentucky Cancer Program at UofL James Graham Brown Cancer Center

• Donald Berg of the Regional Cancer Center Corp.

• Francis Berg of the Kentucky Breast Cancer Alliance

• Dr. Erica Sutton of the University of Louisville

The 2019 Hope Gala is presented Dr. Mark and Cindy Lynn. The event supports cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services for The American Cancer Society.
