Institute for Rural Health receives $20,000 grant from Delta Dental of Kentucky Foundation

The Institute for Rural Health, part of WKU’s College of Health and Human Services, has received a $20,000 grant from Delta Dental of Kentucky’s Foundation.

“The Institute for Rural Health is honored to receive this grant from Delta Dental of Kentucky,” said Dr. Daniel Carter, Dental Director for the Institute for Rural Health. “The funds from Delta Dental provide much-needed preventive dental services to vulnerable populations in the area, as well invaluable real-world experiences to WKU students.”

The $20,000 grant will be used to purchase materials and supplies for the Preventive Program offered by the Mobile Dental Unit, which consists of a sealant program for elementary and middle school children, a fluoride varnish program for Head Start children and a prenatal dental program.

The Institute for Rural Health was established in 2001 to identify and address rural health and human services needs through the utilization of two mobile units, the Mobile Dental Unit and the Mobile Health Unit. The underserved patient population targeted by these Units consists of those with limited access to dental and medical care in geographic areas that suffer from a shortage of health professionals. In the last five years, the Mobile Dental Unit provided more than 11,500 total procedures in underserved communities in Western Kentucky.

Delta Dental of Kentucky, founded in 1966, is the oldest and largest dental plan in Kentucky. It is a not-for-profit dental service corporation. In April 2006, the company moved into the new corporate headquarters in Louisville’s east end. Delta Dental of Kentucky—with its affiliates in Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee—is part of a family of companies that collectively is among the largest dental plan administrators in the nation. In 2016, the Enterprise paid out more than $3.6 billion for dental care for 12.9 million enrollees. Delta Dental of Kentucky also is a member of the Delta Dental Plans Association, America’s largest, most experienced dental benefits system. Together, the plans provide coverage to more than 56 million Americans and operate the nation’s largest network of participating dentists.
