Kentucky cattle producers, clothing store ‘Raising the Steaks’ against hunger as part of KDA’s initiative


Kentucky’s beef industry is celebrating Beef Month by “Raising the Steaks” against hunger in May. For the second year in a row, the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association, the Kentucky Beef Council, and Wildcat Wearhouse are teaming up on a T-shirt to honor the Commonwealth’s beef cattle industry while helping Kentuckians in need.

“We are grateful to our friends at Wildcat Wearhouse for generously offering this T-shirt as a way to raise money to feed Kentucky’s hungry,” Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles said. “When you buy this T-shirt, 50 percent of the proceeds will go to Feeding Kentucky to purchase food for Kentucky food pantries. I hope everyone will join me in buying a shirt, showing your pride in our beef cattle producers, and helping our less fortunate friends and neighbors get the food they need.”

The fundraiser was announced Tuesday during ceremonies proclaiming May as Beef Month in Kentucky. Gov. Matt Bevin issued the proclamation and ceremonially signed House Bill 311, legislation passed in the 2019 session of the Kentucky General Assembly that prohibits marketing lab-grown protein products as meat in Kentucky.

Kentucky is the leading beef cattle state east of the Mississippi River with more than 1 million beef cows. Cattle sales generated more than $740 million in farm cash receipts in Kentucky in 2017, the National Agricultural Statistics Service reported in its annual survey.
