Kentucky Coal Academy showcasing new mine training facility during upcoming open house

The Kentucky Coal Academy (KCA) will host an open house 4-7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, at its Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKCTC) Harlan Campus at 164 Ball Park Road, to mark the opening of its new Mine Training Facility.

“The Kentucky Coal Academy is proud to have a home in Harlan, and is excited to continue providing innovative trainings to new and active miners in Kentucky and surrounding states by utilizing resources like our new Mine Training Facility,” said Gary Whisman, executive director of the KCA. “The new training facility is located right outside our classroom building and can prepare miners to respond to a variety of situations by providing near real-life training experiences.”

In addition to allowing attendees to tour the outdoor Mine Training Facility (in the Mining Industry Building, second floor) visitors will also be able to see classrooms while meeting with faculty and staff; test out the program’s state-of-the-art mining training simulators, which make up the largest fleet of simulators in the world along with its equipment at the KCA’s other three facilities across Kentucky; and demo the Success Xpress and smoke trailer mobile training units.

“Our programs teach transferable skills that can be beneficial in a variety of careers and can also provide customized job training for employers, so we welcome the community to join us in learning more about our programs and services, all focused on producing the most tech-savvy and safety-conscious miners around,” said James Skidmore, director of external education for SKCTC’s KCA program.

Light food and refreshments will be provided at this event, and RSVP is encouraged. For more information and to RSVP, please contact Greg Hiles at greg.hiles@kctcs.edu, or (859) 256-3469, by Monday, March 7.
