Wildcats jump one spot in AP top 25
to No. 14 despite week off before SEC play

Kentucky moved up to No. 14 in this week’s Associated Press top 25, a move reactionary to other teams’ action in the weekly dispatch of college basketball’s 25 best teams according to a panel of 65 sportswriters. Kentucky didn’t play a game since last week’s poll named it No. 15.

Two teams moved back to make room for Kentucky: Duke, which lost to Notre Dame on Saturday, moved from No. 7 to No. 16; and Oregon, which lost its first game of the season to Colorado and fell from No. 10 to No. 17. San Diego State leap-frogged Kentucky, moving from No. 21 to No. 13 on the strength of road wins during the week at Colorado State and Kansas.

The top five remained the same five teams in the same order for the fifth week in a row, but that will change in all likelihood next week, because No. 3 Ohio State plays at No. 5 Michigan State on Tuesday. Arizona held the No. 1 ranking for the fifth week in a row.

Kentucky’s two opponents in the first week of SEC play—Mississippi State and Vanderbilt—are both unranked and well outside poll consideration. According to KenPom.com’s team ratings, which rate the Wildcats 12th best in the country, Mississippi State is No. 203, and Vanderbilt is No. 90.
