Lexington Theatre Co. opens 5th season with ‘West Side Story,’ brings Colton Ryan home from Broadway

The Lexington Theatre Company’s fifth season opens next week at the Lexington Opera House — with West Side Story.

“The Lex is celebrating an important milestone – its fifth season,” Mayor Linda Gorton said this week. “Their mission is to bring together ‘Today’s Broadway Stars and Tomorrow’s Broadway Hopefuls.’ It’s working, and Lexington is the beneficiary. We get to enjoy first-rate professional theater, and our young people get the opportunity to work and learn from professionals.”

This season the stars from Broadway are joined by a collegiate ensemble, representing top theater programs from across the country and across the state. They join together with local Lexington Actors, select high school students from Central Kentucky, and a 29-piece orchestra comprised of excellent local musicians.

Gorton welcomed home Colton Ryan, a Lexington-based Broadway performer who is featured in the lead role of Tony in West Side Story. Ryan, a graduate of the School for the Creative and Performing Arts, developed in Lexington’s artistic community, performing in The Lex “Concert With the Stars” collegiate ensemble. He has since found success in New York with various stage, TV and film projects.

The company’s Artistic Director, Lexington native Lyndy Franklin Smith, founded The Lex with her husband Jeromy Smith, the company’s Producing Director. Both have worked on Broadway, in national tours and in numerous regional theaters, in capacities both on-stage and behind the scenes. They see The Lex as an opportunity to give back to the city of Lexington, its local artists, and students across the nation.

“Here at The Lex, we love the combination of Broadway, local and national theatrical artists coming together to create exceptional productions for our great city,” said Lyndy Franklin Smith.

“It gives us even more joy when we can bring home Lexington artists who have made their mark on Broadway and the New York theater industry. We are thrilled to welcome home Colton Ryan. We are so proud of him and have loved getting to know him through his work with us here at The Lex.

“Having him here along with our other guest stars, incredibly talented stars-to-be, and local Lexington stars is nothing short of magic. We hope the Lexington community will come out and enjoy this beautiful piece we’re creating for this beautiful community.”

In August, the LEX will present Disney’s NEWSIES, fun for the whole family.

West Side Story runs July 11-14 at the Lexington Opera House and is presented by Variety Live at the Opera House with co-producing sponsor CHI Saint Joseph Health. For more information, to buy tickets or make a donation, please visit the organization’s website
