MSC preseason basketball coaches' polls favor defending champs Pikeville, Campbellsville

Mid-South Conference coaches have selected Pikeville as the favorite to win the men’s basketball regular season title in 2014-15, according to the MSC Preseason Coaches’ Poll, while defending champion Campbellsville is the choice on the women’s side.

The Bears — the defending men’s regular season and tournament champions — received 58 points and three first-place votes from the conference coaches’ vote. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team.


Pikeville finished 2013-14 with a 31-3 overall and a 17-1 Mid-South record and reached the second round of last season’s NAIA National Championships.

Georgetown is second in the preseason voting with 54 points and two first-place votes. The Tigers reached the national quarterfinals a season ago, finishing with a 24-11 overall record.

Campbellsville is a close third in the men’s poll with 52 points and three first-place votes. Cumberlands is fourth with 43 points followed by Lindsey Wilson in fifth with 35 points and the final first-place vote.

Mid-South newcomer Life (Ga.) is selected sixth with 30 voting points while St. Catharine (Ky.) checks in a seventh with 29 voting points. Cumberland (Tenn.) and Shawnee State (Ohio) complete the nine-team poll with 15 and eight voting points respectively.

The Mid-South Conference regular season tips-off on Nov. 13 with the men’s MSC Tournament set for March 6-8 at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky.

Campbellsville is the Mid-South Conference favorite to capture the women’s basketball regular season title in 2014-15 after the Tigers received 48 voting and six off the eight first-place votes from the Mid-South Conference head coaches.

Campbellsville won the regular season title in 2013-14 with a 16-2 conference record. The Tigers ended last season with a 32-4 overall record and reached the NAIA National Tournament’s quarterfinals falling to the eventual national champions Oklahoma City.

Lindsey Wilson is second in the balloting with 40 voting points and the final two first-place votes. The Blue Raiders are coming off a 19-12 campaign in 2013-14.

Georgetown is selected third in the preseason poll with 37 points followed by Cumberland (Tenn.) with 31 voting points and Cumberlands with 28 points.

Shawnee State (Ohio), Pikeville and St. Catharine complete the eight-team poll. Shawnee State received 20 voting points followed by Pikeville’s 13 and St. Catharine’s seven.

The Mid-South Conference regular season tips-off on Nov. 13 for the women with the MSC Tournament set for March 5-8 at the Frankfort Convention Center in Frankfort, Ky.
