Nelson County schools closed for two weeks; Imagination Library book event will be rescheduled

The Nelson County community event that was set to be held on Wednesday, March 18, celebrating the completion of a book written by local elementary school students, has been postponed.

Nelson County Schools announced on Friday that they will close in an effort to mitigate the potential for spreading the novel coronavirus. The school system will close through Friday, March 27.

All school-related activities, including the Imagination Library event, are being canceled or postponed.
As part of Dolly’s Parton’s Imagination Library initiative, 932 Nelson County students created their own book, titled Dolly’s Big Journey, and Dolly Parton herself took notice, writing the students to congratulate them on their efforts.

A celebration was set to be held for the students on March 18. To give back to newborns in the community, the school system partnered with Flaget Memorial Hospital to ensure all babies born at the hospital receive a care package that includes the new book.
A new date for this event is set to be announced in the coming weeks.
