Newly-formed Hop Foundation will provide financial relief to employees in craft brewing industry

Kentucky craft brewery employees who are either injured or experiencing health-related issues now have another resource for financial relief as the newly formed Hop (Helping Our People) Foundation launches in the Commonwealth. While similar programs exist in the service industry, this will be the first program of its kind for Kentucky brewery employees not working in the restaurant space.

“We want to give back to our employees,” said Jason Smith, board member of The Hop Foundation, Board President of the Kentucky Guild of Brewers and General Manager at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant in Louisville. “This industry is our family and we need to take care of each other. This is an idea that I have been working on for the last five years and the Guild is now in a position to execute and fundraise for our people.”

The first fundraiser for the Foundation will take place Saturday, October 19th at Wooden Cask Brewery in Newport, KY during the Kentucky Proud Beer Festival. For every ticket sold, $1 will be donated to the fund. And while every brewery is welcome to fundraise in their own way throughout the year on behalf of the Foundation and their employees, the Foundation hopes to have other fundraising opportunities available during future beer festivals.

Interested brewery employees seeking financial help may request their employer submit an application on their behalf. The current limit for any one grant is $1,000 and will be paid directly to the provider. Decisions of whether to grant funds to an applicant are made by the Hop Foundation’s Grant Committee, which is made up of at least five Board members representing breweries throughout the Commonwealth. The Grant Committee can request an interview by phone or in-person of an applicant and can also request additional information from the applicant.
