Three former Kentucky high school or college athletes competed in the ninth full day of the London Olympics. You can see a rundown of their performances below:
Track and field
Lexington native Tyson Gay missed a medal by .01 seconds in the men’s 100-meter dash with a time of 9.8 seconds. Gay finished behind Jamaicans Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake and American teammate Justin Gatlin.
Gay qualified fourth for the final with a time of 9.90 seconds in his semifinal heat. Gay’s time was second fastest in his heat behind Blake. The 100-meter dash was Gay’s only event of the London games.
Former UK runner Rondel Sorrillo, who was competing Trinidad and Tobago, was seventh in Gay’s semifinal heat with a time of 10.31 seconds. He did not qualify for the final, but he will return to action on Aug. 7 in the first round of the men’s 200-meter dash.
Basketball
Former UofL basketball player Angel McCoughtry ranked second among the U. S. women with 16 points in the team’s 114-66 rout of China. McCoughtry added six rebounds, six assists and five steals in the win. The U. S. women return to action in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday.
