Pair of outstanding recruits from Florida to join talented Morehead State basketball in 2020-21

With a load of young talent set to return to the Morehead State men’s basketball program in 2020-21, the influx of new talent is superior as well.

Johni Broome, a 6-foot-10 forward, and Drew Thelwell, a 6-foot-3 guard, recently wrapped up successful senior years leading their Florida high school programs.

Broome, from Tampa Catholic, was named the Hillsborough County Player of the Year. He averaged a double-double for the season with 19.6 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. Broome also blocked 2.2 shots per game.

“I am excited to get to MSU and play the game I love,” he said. “My goal is to get better with a good foundation around me.”

Broome’s team finished 26-6 and was ranked fifth in the Sunshine State, according to MaxPreps. He was also named to the Class 4A State All-Tournament Team.

Thelwell wrapped up his prep career at the Master’s Academy this season, leading the team to a 22-8 record and to the regional semifinals. He averaged 19 points, four assists and five rebounds per outing while hitting a respectable 34 percent from 3-point range.

He was awarded All-State by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association and was Second-Team All-Area by the Orlando Sentinel. Also the team captain, Thelwell was an all-tournament selection at the Monteverde Academy event.

Prior to playing for the Master’s, Thelwell scored more than 1,000 points in three seasons at Orangewood Christian.

“I chose Morehead State because I felt at home when I came to campus,” he said. “I had a great connection with all the coaches and my future teammates. I can’t wait to be an Eagle.”

On top of his basketball skills, Thelwell earned a first-degree black belt in taekwondo when he was nine years old and has been awarded a community service award three times.
