Three of Kentucky’s regional public universities have now joined forces to offer classes at the new University Center of Southern Kentucky, located on the campus of Somerset Community College.

The University Center of Southern Kentucky, or UCSK, launched this past May, with the first classes during the fall semester, allowing students from southeast Kentucky to earn the third and fourth years of a bachelor’s degree, at SCC’s Somerset Campus.

UCSK is an initiative of Fifth District Congressman Hal Rogers, R-Somerset, who said, “The one thing missing from the Lake Cumberland region is the option for students to get an affordable bachelor’s degree. Now, students have the option to stay here at home to get a four-year degree at an affordable rate.”

Eastern Kentucky University is the most recent regional university to join the partnership, as EKU President Michael Benson joined SCC President Carey Castle for a ceremony Thursday in which they signed a memorandum of agreement.

“This is an incredible opportunity for students who want to stay in southern Kentucky but want to get a four-year degree from EKU in one of our core areas like criminal justice,” said Benson.

In addition to criminal justice classes held in Somerset, Eastern will also offer a variety of its online courses through the UCSK program, including communications, business and nursing.

Western Kentucky University offers hybrid (in person and online) courses in Education, with online offerings in IT, Engineering Technology Management, Biology and Organizational Leadership.

Morehead State University, the third UCSK participant, has several online courses in the business field, as well as Technology Management, Medical Imaging, Post-Licensure Nursing and Professional Studies.

Programs from the University of Kentucky are expected to be offered in the future.
