“The journey to grow our family has not been easy,” Grimes said in making the announcement. “With the assistance of talented doctors, numerous surgeries, a supportive family and immense prayer and faith, we are finally in a place where we can announce joyous news to the Commonwealth – we are expecting our first child, a baby boy, in December.”

Grimes said the news wasn’t something she ever thought was possible after she “endured the devastating heartbreak of multiple miscarriages.”

“Andrew and I appreciate the outpouring of love and support and continue to hold those struggling with infertility in our hearts. You are not alone.”

The 39-year-old Grimes, who will be leaving the Secretary of State’s office in 2019 after her second term, is one of several Democrats being mentioned as potential gubernatorial candidates next year, though she hasn’t said whether she will run.

“Secretary Grimes is looking forward to joining the ranks of the thousands of working moms across Kentucky,” said spokesman Bradford Queen. “With this news, she is more driven than ever to keep working as an advocate for women and families to build a commonwealth all of our children can be proud of.”
