Spring 2014 brings new art classes for adults and teens at Living Arts and Science Center


The Living Arts & Science Center in Lexington is now taking registrations for new 2014 adult and teen art classes beginning Jan. 18.
 
Nine classes and one extension offered through May are: Suminagashi (Japanese ink on silk and paper), Drawing, Sill Life Oil Painting, Building an Art Portfolio, Copying the Old Masters, Building a Handmade Shop on Etsy.com, How to Photograph Your Art, Diorama Dreamscapes, and Drawing and Painting Portraits (with a live model).

Classes are available on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturdays. All classes are taught by professional artists and arts educators. See teachers’ bios and the complete class schedule here.
 
In January, the two classes offered are Suminagashi with Maggie Rogers on Saturdays, Jan. 18 and 25, from 10 a.m.to noon and Painting from Photos for Beginners with Patrick Smith on Tuesdays, Jan. 7, 14 and 21, from 6-8 p.m. In Suminagashi (ink-floating), students will explore the ancient Japanese technique of decorating paper with inks and create colorful silk scarves, paper prints, journals, cards and more. The cost is $60 for non-members and $50 for LASC members.
 
The Painting from Photos class is an extension of class No. 257 which is a pre-requisite. Students will learn to paint from photographs using acrylic paints by beginning with a grid transferred to a canvas. Students should bring several color photographs or magazine pages for inspiration. Instruction will be tailored to their skills and interests. The cost is $70 for non-members and $60 for members.
 
February classes include Drawing with Markers and Pens with Smith, Still Life Oil Painting with Stevie Moore and Building Your Art Portfolio with Lennon Michalski.
 
Smith’s Drawing with Markers and Pens meets on Tuesdays, Feb. 11, 18 and 25, from 6-8 p.m. Students will learn how to use a variety of markers, paint pens, ball point pens and sharpies to make flashy work that includes layering colors and shading. The cost is $70 for non-members and $60 for members.
 
Moore’s Still Life Oil Painting meets on Thursdays, Feb. 13, 20 and 27, from 6-8 p.m. Students will learn the fundamentals of oil painting and working with still life subject matter. Lessons will include learning how to break up objects into simple shapes to help representation, how to do value studies and how to use lighting to create drama and mood. There will be exploration of basic color mixing techniques for oil painting and introduce simple color palettes. The cost is $160 for non-members and $150 for members.
 
Michalski’s Building Your Art Portfolio is a three-session workshop meeting on Saturdays, Feb. 15, 22 and March 1, from 12-2 p.m. It is primarily for those needing to produce an art portfolio for college applications, Advanced Placement credit, Governor’s School for the Arts or other special programs. The workshop will be tailored to the individual. The cost is $70 for non-members and $60 for members.
 
Building Your Handmade Shop on Etsy.com with Larry Watson will meet on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for $40 for non-members and $30 for members. Also in March will be two workshops on How to Photography Your Art with Maggie Rogers on Saturdays, March 22 and 29, from 10 a.m. to noon for $50 for non-members and $40 for members.
 
Beginning in March and continuing through April will be Copying the Old Masters with Ashley Howell on Thursdays, March 27 and April 3, 10, 17 and 24, from 6-8 p.m. for $100 for non-members and $90 for members.
 
On Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Aurora Parrish will teach Diorama Dreamscapes for $40 for non-members and $30 for members.
 
Four Thursdays in May – May 8, 15, 22 and 29 – will feature Howell teaching Drawing and Painting the Portrait from Life from 6-8 p.m. for $120 for non-members and $110 for members.
