St. X, Central Hardin advance to semifinals with wins in KHSAA baseball tournament

St. X uses four-run second inning to earn win over Central Hardin

St. Xavier High School jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third inning, then held off a Central Hardin High School rally to earn a 6-3 win in the quarterfinal round of the KHSAA state baseball tournament. St. X senior right fielder Matt Spalding, who was 29th round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2011 MLB draft and has signed to play college baseball at Western Kentucky University, was 3-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Senior second baseman Shaun Johnston was 2-4 with one double and two runs scored, and senior pitcher Zach Clooney earned the win after surrendering one run in three and two-third scoreless innings of relief. Warren East junior center fielder Janos Briscoe was 2-3 with one home run, one RBI and two runs scored. Central Hardin holds Apollo to three hits in second-round win

Central Hardin High School scored four runs in the fifth inning and used a quality start from senior pitcher Dylan Shoffner to earn a 6-2 win over Apollo High School to advance to the semifinals of the KHSAA state baseball tournament. Shoffner surrendered two runs on three hits in six innings while striking out eight batters and walking four. Senior second baseman Levi McCamish was 3-4 with one double, one triple and one run scored, and senior left fielder Matt Nichols slugged a home run and drove in four runs. Apollo senior pitcher Matt Hodskins was charged with the loss after surrendering six runs on six hits in four and one-third innings. (Box Score)
