The Lexington Philharmonic is branching out to libraries and reaching out to kids

During the week of July 14, 2014 the Lexington Philharmonic continues the LexPhil at the Library series with six presentations of Music Builds Science!, an engaging hour-long program for children K-4 and at six branches of the Lexington Public Library.

LexPhil will also present Storytelling through Music at the Beaumont Branch Library, the final lecture of the LexPhil Lecture Series geared toward adults and interested teens. This is the second year of partnership with the Lexington Public Library with program dates coinciding with their Summer Reading Series.

At Music Builds Science!, children will take on the role of musical detectives and, with the help of LexPhil staff, explore the science behind sound production. This program is designed within the framework of LexPhil’s Music Builds education platform.

LexPhil’s Music Builds programs are based on the national STEAM education movement, which emphasizes the importance of integrating the Arts into Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education (STEM + Arts = STEAM).

Attendees are encouraged to pre-register at the Lexington Public Library – www.lexpublib.org. Dates and locations for Music Builds Science are available at the Lexington Public Library website.

The final lecture of the summer LexPhil Lecture Series, Storytelling through Music, will take place July 14, 2014 at 6:30 PM at the Beaumont Branch Library.

Attendees will enjoy a short lecture about how music enhances the art of storytelling followed by an interactive round of “musical mad-libs” featuring LexPhil Violinist Elizabeth Ryland Steva.

The LexPhil Lecture Series kicked off in early June with the Science of Sound featuring guest lecturer Jeffrey Spenner at the Tates Creek Branch Library, and continued later in the month with Arts Administration: the Business of Music featuring LexPhil staff at the Eagle Creek Branch Library.

Attendees are encouraged to pre-register at the Lexington Public Library website here.
