The Plantory accepting applications for Fall 2018 Get On Board citizen education Program

The Plantory announces they are now taking applications for their fall Get On Board program. Get on Board is a bi-annual course designed to increase diversity in the city’s various governing boards by giving citizens the tools to be effective and well-prepared board members. Classes cover topics ranging from diversity and inclusion, fundraising, public speaking, financial and legal responsibilities, ethics, as well as many others.

“The Get On Board program is a vital component to increasing the voice of traditionally underrepresented populations in our community,” stated Ms. Baker, the Plantory’s Chief Operations Officer. “In the two years we’ve hosted the program, we’ve prepared more than 60 individuals for board service and we’re looking to increase that number with this fall’s class.”

At the end of the program, advisors work with participants to identify and pursue membership with those boards whose missions most interest them. Organizations who have accepted recent graduates include: Girls on the Run, GleanKY, Seadleaf, Fayette County Domestic Violence Prevention board, and Lexington Fairness among many others.

Stephanie Wooten, Executive Director of GleanKY, a food justice nonprofit whose mission is to gather and redistribute excess fresh fruits and vegetables to nourish Kentucky’s hungry, states “[We’re] grateful to have two Get On Board graduates on our Board of Directors. Both graduates have come to our organization with a robust understanding of what it means to commit to a board position, knowledge of critical board duties and responsibilities, and a passion for making a difference in the community. We plan on recruiting Get on Board participants every year!”

The program fee is $250 dollars, with numerous scholarships available. Go to: www.lexgetonboard.org to apply. Deadline is August 3rd.

The Plantory hosts an accessible, innovative and energizing coworking hub that fosters collaboration and nurtures growth for positive, passionate, and community-minded businesses and nonprofit organizations.
