Travel spending in Fayette County rose to record level of $2 billion in 2016, report says

A new state survey showed that total travel spending in 2016 rose to record levels again in Fayette County.

Statewide data was released by the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet in conjunction with National Tourism Week May 7-13.

“We’ve built on two years of historic success – the Breeders’ Cup in 2015 and topping the $2 billion mark for the first time in 2016,” said Mary Quinn Ramer, president of VisitLEX. “To continue to accomplish increases is a great tribute to local and state partnerships, local attractions, and the entire community, which always welcomes visitors with true hospitality.”

According to the “Economic Impact of Kentucky’s Travel and Tourism Industry – 2015 and 2016,” Fayette County had $2.048 billion in total travel spending. For the 15-county region that includes Lexington, expenditures were $3.147 billion.

Tourism is one of Kentucky’s top industries with an annual economic impact in 2016 of almost $14.5 billion.

The annual survey also showed that tourism was responsible for more than 192,000 jobs in Kentucky in 2016. These jobs generated $3.2 billion in wages for Kentucky workers, an increase of $156 million from 2015.

In the 15-county region, tourism employment was 27,364 — with Fayette County making up well more than half of that with 15,339.

Tourism generated $1.5 billion in tax revenues for local and state governments in 2015, an increase from $1.44 billion in 2015.

The survey was produced for the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet by Certec Inc. of Versailles. More details about the tourism economic impact study are available at www.kentuckytourism.com/industry.
