United Way of the Bluegrass offering free tax filing assistance at twelve sites in Central Kentucky

United Way of the Bluegrass announced the kick-off of its annual free tax preparation program on Friday in celebration of EITC Awareness Day – a national grassroots effort to spotlight the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

Local residents can receive valuable help this tax season through the Central Kentucky Economic Empowerment Project (CKEEP), which is providing free tax preparation assistance at 12 tax sites across Central Kentucky.  EITC is an important tax credit that can help low-and-moderate income families cover day-to-day expenses such as utilities, rent, and childcare. The IRS estimates, however, that 20% of eligible people could miss out on the EITC because they don’t know about it, don’t know that they qualify, or don’t know where to find free tax filing assistance.

United Way of the Bluegrass says its free tax preparation services can help ensure that more people receive the EITC.  “Having your taxes prepared at no cost by an IRS trained volunteer or doing them at home through a free and reputable program can help maximize your return and put more money in your pocket,” says Katie Tibbs, Financial Stability Manager. “EITC is a financial boost for working people and our local economy. CKEEP is an excellent program that helps spread awareness about this tax break, and helps people navigate the process of tax filing,” Tibbs said.
Some CKEEP tax sites can direct their customers to financial assistance programs, credit repair services or financial education classes. The program aims to educate participants on the process of filing and hopes to strengthen the financial stability of families in Central Kentucky.
Taxpayers earning less than $66,000 can enter their data through MyFreeTaxes.com, which links to a secure H&R Block website, making it easy to complete their taxes from home, at work or on mobile devices. Taxpayers earning less than $54,000 can schedule a one-on-one appointment with a volunteer tax specialist.

Central Kentucky residents can visit www.uwbg.org/CKEEP, text KYTAXES to 898211, or call 2-1-1 after receiving their W2s to see if they qualify for this free service.

The Central Kentucky Economic Empowerment Project (CKEEP) is a coalition led by United Way of the Bluegrass, in partnership with the IRS and various agencies across the region to provide free tax preparation services, and promote financial stability to low-income individuals and families living in Central Kentucky.
