Warren East, St. X, Apollo and Central Hardin earn wins at KHSAA state baseball tourney

UofL signee Biggs leads Warren East to first-round win

Warren East High School scored two runs in the first inning then rode six strong innings from Toronto Blue Jays draftee Mark Biggs to a 6-2 win over Letcher County Central High School. Biggs, a senior pitcher and infielder who was the Blue Jays’ eighth-round pick in the 2011 draft, earned his fifth win of the season after surrendering two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits in six innings while striking out nine batters and walking one. He was 1-1 with one double, two RBIs, three walks and one run scored at the plate. Senior catcher Zach Gross was 2-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Letcher County sophomore pitcher Jordan Short took the loss after surrendering four runs on six hits in five innings. (Box Score)

Apollo mercies Mayfield in tournament’s second game

Apollo scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 10-run lead, kicking in the high school baseball mercy rule, in a 10-0 win over Mayfield. Senior right fielder Dorian Taylor was 2-4 with one triple, two RBIs and two runs scored, and senior designated hitter Matt Hodskins was 2-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Junior pitcher Brandon Hamilton earned a win after surrendering four hits in five shutout innings. Mayfield senior pitcher Austin Clark took the loss after surrendering five runs in two-thirds of an inning. (Box Score)

St. X clicking on all cylinders in 10-0 win over Clay County

St Xavier scored four runs in the first inning and held Clay County to just two hits in a 10-0, mercy-rule win in five innings. Western Kentucky University signee Matt Spalding, the 29th round pick of the Boston Red Sox in 2011 draft, earned the win after surrendering two hits in five scoreless innings while striking out five batters and walking none. Spalding was 3-3 with one double and four RBIs at the plate. University of Kentucky signee Ryan Loehnert was 2-3 with one double, two RBIs and two runs scored for St. X. Clay County junior pitcher Justin Smith took the loss after surrendering eight runs on nine hits in three and one-third innings. (Box Score)

Central Hardin jumps out to early lead in blowout win over GRC

Central Hardin High School scored six runs over the first two innings and rode a complete-game shuout from senior pitcher Austin Walters to a 9-0 win over George Rogers Clark High School in the final game of day one of the KHSAA state baseball tournament. Walters surrendered six hits in seven shutout innings while striking out 11 batters and walking two to earn his 12th win of the season. Senior catcher Russ Morse was 2-4 with one double, three RBIs and one run scored, and senior second baseman Levi McCamish was 2-3 with one RBI and three runs scored. GRC senior pitcher Anthony Withrow took the loss after surrendering six runs on seven hits in four innings while striking out six batters and walking three. (Box Score)
